The School of Engineering and the Office of Postgraduate Studies collaboratively hosted the 2019 HKUST 3MT® Competition on April 4, 2019. Through the pre-selection interview, nine students from six countries and with seven different majors were selected for the final round. The judging panel of the final round included Professor Richard So, Associate Dean of Engineering, Professor Ning Wang, Chair Professor and PG Coordinator of Physics, Professor George Yuan, Associate Professor and PG Coordinator of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Professor Zhihong Chen, Associate Professor and PhD/MPhil Program Director of Accounting, and Professor Stuart Gietel-Basten, Associate Professor of Social Science. Following nine 3MT® presentations, Mr Graham Young and Ms Tania Wilmshurst, instructors of the HKUST RPg Communication Skills Training Program, shared their experience of interacting with HKUST RPg students. The audience also exchanged opinions on RPg communication skills enhancement with them. After an hour and a half’s presentation and discussion, Kumar Siddharth, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBME) PhD student under the supervision of Professor Minhua Shao, won the Championship and People’s Choice Award. The second place went to Usman Bin Shahid, also CBME PhD student under the supervision of Professor Minhua Shao. Two students won the third place, and they are Panagiotis Simatis, Computer Science and Engineering MPhil student under the supervision of Professor Dimitrios Papadias, and Lingeswaran Arunagiri, Chemistry PhD student under the supervision of Professor He Yan. Panagiotis also won the People’s Choice Award together with Kumar. Kumar and Usman will attend the 2019 Asia-Pacific 3MT® Competition to be held in Brisbane, Australia on October 4, 2019.

Kumar will also represent HKUST to compete at the 2019 Asia-Pacific 3MT® Competition with 70 students from 70 universities across “Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, North-East Asia and South-East Asia”.
